    Cyclic Ovarian Hormone Modulation of Supraspinal Δ\u3csup\u3e9\u3c/sup\u3e-tetrahydrocannabinol-induced Antinociception and Cannabinoid Receptor Binding in the Female Rat

    Estrous cycle-related fluctuations in delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-induced antinociception have been observed in the rat. The aim of this study was to determine which major ovarian hormone modulates the antinociceptive effects of i.c.v. THC, and whether hormone modulation of THC\u27s behavioral effects could be due to changes in brain cannabinoid receptors (CBr). Vehicle (oil) or hormones (estradiol or progesterone, or both) were administered to female rats on days 3 and 7 post-ovariectomy. On the morning or afternoon of day 8 or day 9, vehicle or THC (100 μg) was administered i.c.v. Paw pressure, tail withdrawal, locomotor activity and catalepsy tests were conducted over a 3-h period. Estradiol (with and without progesterone) enhanced THC-induced paw pressure antinociception only. Ovarian hormones time-dependently modulated CBr in brain structures that mediate antinociception and locomotor activity, but the changes observed in CBr did not parallel changes in behavior. However, the time course of CBr changes must be further elucidated to determine the functional relationship between receptor changes and antinociceptive sensitivity to THC

    Economic Freedom Through Entrepreneurship

    Entrepreneurship represents a means of increasing personal freedom and designing an attendant lifestyle. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies sole proprietors used to sustain their small business operations beyond five years and attain profitability levels necessary for freedom and autonomy. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews of 10 entrepreneurs who answered open-ended interview questions, granted access to archival documents, and direct observation of their business operations. The conceptual framework was emancipation theory addressing personal freedom through business autonomy. With the modified van Kaam method, the identification of emerging themes involved identifying groupings, clusters, and unrelated antecedents all of which yielded such themes as customer service, personal control, and creativity. The customer service theme was prevalent throughout the interview. The personal control theme arose from participants\u27 perceptions of emancipation, business autonomy, and personal freedom. The creativity theme appeared through the comments of all participants; each participant alluded to the power of creativity and vision. Determination mattered to all the participants. The participants harped on the need for inward strength necessary to overcome all obstacles. Results from this study may contribute to social change assisting sole proprietors in strategies to grow their businesses to profitability, attain personal freedom, and contribute to community economic development which in turn would extend to benefits a stable economy across the community for a safe and progressive society

    A Study of Implementation Methodologies for Distributed Real Time Collaboration

    Collaboration drives our world and is almost unavoidable in the programming industry. From higher education to the top technological companies, people are working together to drive discovery and innovation. Software engineers must work with their peers to accomplish goals daily in their workplace. When working with others there are a variety of tools to choose from such as Google Docs, Google Colab and Overleaf. Each of the aforementioned collaborative tools utilizes the Operational Transform (OT) technique in order to implement their real time collaboration functionality. Operational transform is the technique seen amongst most if not all major collaborative tools in our industry today. However, there is another way of implementing real time collaboration through a data structure called Conflict-free Replicated Data Type (CRDT) which has made claims of superiority over OT. Previous studies have taken place with the focus on comparing the theory behind OT and CRDT\u27s, but as far as we know, there have not been studies which compare real time collaboration performance using an OT implementation versus a CRDT implementation in a popularly used product such as Google Docs or Overleaf. Our work will focus on comparing OT and CRDT\u27s real time collaborative performance in Overleaf, an academic authorship tool, which allows for easy collaboration on academic and professional papers. Overleaf\u27s current published version implements real time collaboration using operational transform. This thesis will contribute an analysis of the current real time collaboration performance of operational transform in Overleaf, an implementation of CRDT\u27s for real time collaboration in Overleaf and an analysis of the performance of real time collaboration through the CRDT implementation in Overleaf. This thesis describes the main advantages and disadvantages of OT vs CRDTs, as well as, to our knowledge, the first results of a non-theoretical attempt at implementing CRDTs for handling document edits in a collaborative environment which was originally operating using an OT implementation
